Alternate Issue 1 Cover & Promotion

(1/1)

Adam Dravian:

Above you can see a preview image for the alternate cover that'll be featured on some of the print versions of Issue 01 (we hope to have the print versions of issue 01 ready by this summer). If the image looks familiar to you, that's because it's a parody of this badass promotional art done for Double Dragon II.

We'd love to credit the original artist, but can't find out that information anywhere. So if any of you know who made that masterpiece, let us know.

Also, since we launched this website back in March, we've pretty much only told our friends and acquaintances about it. But starting today, we're going to promote it to strangers on the 'net. Hopefully our rad little comic can find its audience.

Jessica Safron:
Right now, I'm working on getting this ninja's jaw to look like it's exploding out of his mask properly. I'm also trying to see if making him blue instead of red will look any good, in an attempt to make the blood and fire stand out more. If I can't get him to look just right, I might just leave it as-is.

In addition to the Double Dragon II piece, I took some inspiration from Machine Gun Willy in this flyer for the first Double Dragon:

So far we've had a pretty positive response from /r/comics on Reddit. However, /u/stopmotionporn did voice some concern:

"How is the cover a parody? Looks more like just plain imitation to me."

My rationale, in case anyone else is wondering the same thing: By ramping up the violence and T&A for comedic effect. If it doesn't shine beams of joy into your heart like it's been doing to me as I've been working on it, I guess its parody magic isn't as effective for everyone. :(

I would say parody exists in a range. Could be obvious imitation with augmentations all the way to subtle references or whatever.

Hell, Wikipedia says:

--- Quote ---A parody, in current use, is an imitative work created to mock, comment on or trivialize an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of satiric or ironic imitation.
--- End quote ---

So I think it is more just the preference of the person.

HerRoyalBitchness:
That is really awesome, great work! I think it's just easier for people to be critical online. It's not like you are trying to deny that you used it as inspiration for the cover AND it's an alternate cover.

Gregg Samsa:
It's reddit, so these humorless jerks will always exist - & I'll downvote them all.
