Fucking punks, man. The ubiquitous minor villains of the 80s.

Satan Ninja's 2nd form originally had completely different pixel art, but Jessica and I weren't satisfied with it, so she redid it. Also, we considered changing the boss's name to something like "Demon Ninja" because we didn't want readers to get the impression that the comic is named after the final boss of the Double Dudes game. But fuck that, he's Satan Ninja.

The bottom panel of Eddie being "in the zone" is one of my favorite panels so far.

So the comic has barely started, and we've already dropped our first "fuck" and showed some tits. And a Satan. We knew our comic, by its very nature, was going contain a lot of this type of thing, and we figured we should present it sooner than later, so new readers could know what to expect from our comic.

The "Engrish" text, "Get me escape" and "Prepare for kill time," are actually taken verbatim from two different real-life 80s arcade games. Bonus points for anyone who knows which ones (because I seriously don't remember).

Man, figuring out how we wanted to display this two-page spread on the website was a pain in the ass. We looked at the way some other webcomics handle two-page spreads but none of the options seemed appealing. Thankfully, our Web Dude, Ghoul, figured out the current solution.

Aside from briefly dicking around with one of the old RPG Maker games in her early teens, this was Jessica's first time doing pixel art. She was going to make the pixel resolution lower, more like an 8-bit NES game, but I convinced her to aim more for a late-80's arcade game, like Final Fight.

Originally, these two pages were a single panel on top of one page, but it was so small that you could hardly even tell it was pixel art. Since the panel was so rad, we rearranged the first few pages to turn it into a glorious two-page spread.

Discuss Comic Pages / Issue 1 - Video Dreamer - Cover
« on: March 01, 2014, 03:53:57 AM »

This was actually the last page that Jessica drew for Issue 1. Being the cover of our very first issue, it had to not only represent the contents of the issue, but of the entire series. So we knew we wanted to have the titular "Satan Ninja" on display, but we didn't want to completely spoil the eventual reveal within the comic, so we kept him mostly in silhouette.

At one point, we talked about having the cover of every issue be a parody of a different 80s movie poster, but we decided that was too limiting. But we do have an awesome idea for an alternate cover to Issue 1. We should have that ready for some of the conventions we'll be appearing at.
