G'day everyone from Australia! (I and no one I know never actually say that, I'm just emphasising I'm Australian).
So I've been following this comic since about early-December, and I've finally decided to make an account, because the convo's here always look like a blast. Just want to say that Jessica, your art style is awesome, and the very layout of this website is awesome too.

Welcome to the forum, Australian Dude! I heard a rumor that every time someone posts here, their radness levels increase, so you totally made a great choice. So how did you discover the comic back in December?

Anyway, I've decided that whenever you post a new page, I'll comment but also try guess whatever new 80s references there might be. Regarding this page, Frost and Morley are obviously Lost Boys, Chomer's Chucky, and since you mentioned punk/gothic references, Rio is based off Echo and The Bunnymen and Shade probably off Siouxie and the Banshee's, maybe. Should be fun being here!

Awesome. I totally dig your idea. Frost is inspired by a Lost Boy, but Morley actually isn't. You're right about the Chomer/Chucky connection. For Rio... you know, he does totally remind me of the singer for Echo and the Bunnymen, but I don't think that's who Jessica drew inspiration from. I think Siouxsie Sioux was an inspiration for Kitty, but not so much Shade.

I'll give you a big hint that'll help you out with this in general. Very few characters in the comic have a single '80s source of inspiration. For instance, Frost is partially inspired by a Lost Boy, as you guessed, but he's also inspired by a gothic rock singer. Morely's hair is inspired by one gothic/punk rock singer, but his face is inspired by another goth rocker.

I didn't notice the struggling not to swear so much, or maybe I just stopped looking for it after a while.

I spoke in a rather guarded way, doing little pauses to re-route sentences as I was speaking them, in order to stay in the family friendly zone (the lamest of zones). It stands out to me when I listen to it, but might not be so obvious to others.

That was a good interview I'd say, I never manage to talk about anything for an hour myself..

Thanks. After it was done, there were all sorts of things that occurred to me that I wish I'd said, but that's pretty typical when it comes to these things. We were nervous to listen to it (especially Jessica), but it turned out better than we'd anticipated.

It might not be the height he takes issue with. Could be the beards. After all, he's got a pint-sized player (Chomer) who's playing a halfling.

I don't know why but "deadpan face" seems to capture it exactly right and at the same time make me giggle like a happy idiot. I'll be looking for a way to use it in my daily speech now..

I just want to point out that Morley’s hair was not inspired by Johnny’s Depp’s portrayal of Sweeney Todd. It’s actually inspired by a certain gothic/punk singer from the ‘80s. We didn’t even realize how much it resembled Sweeney Todd’s hair until someone pointed it out to us, since neither of us have seen the movie.

Soooooo goth!

We know a lot of people associate goth culture with the '90s, since the likes of Marilyn Manson and Korn brought it into the mainstream, so we really wanted to make sure to try and capture the essence of '80s goth with these characters. We took a lot of inspiration from goth musicians of the '80s, as well as a few movie characters.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been away for a few days.

Thank Gygax! Rijst has commented! We were thinking about throwing in the towel due the minimal response this page got. (I'm kidding of course, I don't think we'd throw in the towel even if everyone in the world hated this comic; we love it too much).

Morley looks a bit bored haha!

I love the juxtaposition between Morley's deadpan face and the fact that he's sitting at a table ready to adjudicate a fantasy game of the imagination.

Awesome. You'll have to let us know what you think. I have no idea how many people have actually listened to it, as that podcast doesn't seem to have an active community at all. So there's no feedback on their end. But hopefully at least someone discovered our comic by listening to it. But even if it doesn't bring us much exposure, it was at least a learning experience. We definitely took some lessons away from it so we'll be better prepared for future podcast appearances.

They must've been thinking about a ninja-like character but couldn't come up with anything cool until they saw this comic. That's when they realised they could never top it and went with the good old "if you can't beat them join them" mantra..

They have another ninja character that's some raver chick called Nightclub Ninja. But yeah, totally not as cool as Satan Ninja. I got the impression that the creator of the card came discovered the comic and thought it was super awesome, so he wanted it as part of a game just because he's a fan. We're a pretty unknown comic, so it couldn't have purely been a move to try and get us to promote it.

This is a great podcast.  I totally expected that this would be a shorter interview.  I think you guy's really told your story well, and I think this kind of thing could really bring more people in for you.

Thanks for giving it a listen, dude. Hopefully the next podcast we're on isn't so strict about being family friendly, so we can relax and not have to worry about carefully phrasing everything.

Pretty appropriate for the 13th page of Issue 3, I'd say.

Up until a few days ago, the character named Frost was named Suther, and the character named Rio was named Frost. However, ever since Jessica first drew the characters for the cover, I’ve been catching myself wanting to call the goth with the sunglasses Frost (I think it’s the white hair). Jessica thought the name Suther was too much of a direct reference to one of his inspirations, so we went ahead and renamed him Frost. But then we had a hell of a time thinking up a new name for the pretty-boy goth. Finally, Jessica came up with Rio, both as a nod to a certain pretty-boy cartoon character and a famous ‘80s album.

That's really cool man, do they use a lot of comic characters?

Actually, no. Most of the characters are made up specifically for the Neon City card games, and they're mostly parodies of characters from '80s and '90s video games. There are a few guest characters from other franchises, but I'm fairly certain that Satan Ninja is the only character taken from a comic.

Great interview guys! Can you tell the effect of this sort of exposure in increased readership?

The effect is usually pretty minimal, since most of the sites that we've been featured on so far don't have a big enough readership to really give us much of a boost. The main exception being the exposure we've gotten from Maddox.

Even so, I'd be hard-pressed to turn down an interview or whatever, no matter how small a site is. Because, for one, we're too ego-maniacal to turn down a chance to be in the spotlight, and two, even if the exposure only gets us one new reader, it can be worth it. After all, that new reader might be our next Rijst (but you'll always be our first and favorite Rijst).
