Here’s a bit of SN8X lore that I’m not sure when or if it’ll ever get fully revealed in the comic.

Jeffrey “Razor” Moore is 20, while Jennifer Moore is 19. Lucas Moore and his wife Nancy couldn’t have children of their own, so they adopted the siblings when they were 4 and 3 years old. Since Lucas and Nancy were already in their late sixties at the time, they had the kids call them Grandma and Grandpa instead of Mom and Dad.

Nancy passed away 10 years before the start of the comic, and shortly after that is when Lucas Moore opened up the first Pizza Wizard (he had already made a fortune, first through an ancient treasure hoard discovery in 193X, and then again by opening up River City’s first multi-screen movie theater in 196X). Pizza Wizard was a big hit and has already branched out into a national franchise.

Razor moved out of Moore Manor so he could pretend to slum it up like a “real” punk, though he still collects a sizable weekly allowance from Lucas. Jennifer still lives at the Moore Manor while she attends college.

I don't know about you guys, but to me the gold standard of montage music is Push it to the limit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd90-m7eO6Y).  Also, I like the shout-out to Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!! as that was my favourite NES game when I was young.  I only ever got as far as Mr. Sandman, and for a while I thought that wasn't too bad.  That is until I saw video of a guy getting to Mike Tyson-blindfolded (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvzIb53Lcno).  I also remember playing Ninja Gaiden as a kid and as far as I can recall, I didn't get very far.

It seems you linked to the wrong video with that first link, but I assume you meant to link to the Push it to the Limit montage in Scarface. Awesome song, and an awesome movie. The singer of that song is also the vocalist for Device, one of the most obscure and underrated synth pop '80s bands. They only put out a single album in '86, which was oddly called 22B3. It's totally rad, if you're into dark '80s synth pop.

You might be the first person to call out the Punch-Out!! reference, which is surprising, because I thought it was one of the most obvious references on the page. Someone called out the Gymkata reference almost instantly, which I didn't think anyone would notice. I think I was able to get up to Mike Tyson in Punch-Out!!, but my memory could be fucking with me and I might've only gotten to him by putting in the code to skip directly to him. Don't think I ever managed to beat him. Impressive video—it's always crazy to watch people plow through these games that seemed nearly impossible when I was a kid. The farthest I got in Ninja Gaiden was Bloody Malth, the red-masked badass lighting-hurling fucker that guards the end of one of the game's final levels.

Oh, and by the way, I was wondering how I could post links on here without showing the URL.

This is one of those things that can look complicated when an explanation is typed out, but it's actually super easy once you get the hang of it. I'll try to explain.

First, type out the text you want to turn into a link. Then highlight just that text and click the "Insert Hyperlink" button (the Earth-looking icon that's below the Italics button). That'll envelope the text with the code that turns it into a clickable link, but now we need to add an actual link to it. To add the URL, you need to fuck with that code, but just a little. Place your cursor just after the "L" in the first bracket-enclosed URL "[url]" (so not the one that's preceded by a backslash), and add an equals sign "=". Next, copy the URL you want the text to link to and then paste that URL directly after the equals sign you added. That's it, the text will become a link directing to the URL you specified.

So in short, you highlight the text you want to become a link, you click the globe button, and then you toss an equals sign and past the URL just before the end bracket ( this guy: ] ) of the start of the url code, the one that looks like this: [url] . You don't fuck with the second bracket-enclosed url, the one with the backslash. Hope that makes sense.

Well, even if the collab doesn't work out, maybe I-Mockery will add Satan Ninja to their Chums list at the very least, or something.

Yeah, you never know what can happen. For the past two years, Roger has been on Maddox's podcast around Halloween time, and Jessica and I will be out that way during the spooky season this year, so we'll see.

Another possibility would be finding a few guys who'd be interested in making a sort of beat em up platform enthusiasts can use to make their own games with. Basically a program you can plug simple animations into, some environments, etc.

In order to showcase what the platform can do you'd build a game with it, which would be excellent advertisement for SN8X if that were to be the game..

Ah, sort of a Trojan Horse approach. Not a bad idea, but what you're suggesting is that we'd make the street brawler equivalent to RPG Maker. Making a highly customizable editor that's accessible and easy to use would take a lot of effort, and then we'd still have to use that engine to create an SN8X game on top of that. If we're going to spend the time to create an SN8X video game, we'd want to focus on simply making the best SN8X video game we can. That means creating a game engine that's geared specifically to the gameplay elements we'd have in our game, without worrying about sticking to features that would lend itself well to a "universal" street brawler game.

Also, I'd want there to be more to the game that simply being a Double Dragon clone with SN8X-themed graphics. But it's waaaaay too early for me to really get into that.

Okay Adam, since you've been such a cool guy to me, I'll give you another example.  I don't know what your thoughts of I-Mockery are, but I do know that they make their own flash games.  Some of their games are original (i.e. Godball), some are based on video games and video game characters (i.e. Abobo's Big Adventure) and some are based off movie characters (i.e. Goon: The Game!).  Roger Barr, the creator of I-Mockery, is a friend of Maddox and judging by the content on http://www.i-mockery.com/, he doesn't shy away from R-Rated stuff or retro stuff.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if Roger became a fan of Satan Ninja (or maybe he already is, I don't know).

As for Rijst's idea, it sounds a lot like Mario Maker or Minecraft which sounds pretty cool.  I've always liked the idea of being able to create my own environment in a video game (it's a big reason why I liked playing Excitebike).

First off, I definitely think Excitebike is one of the best of the first wave of NES games. I don't think I ever got too creative with the level editor though—all I would do is place that ramp that let's you get the most air. Over and over again.

I'm familiar with Roger Barr, mostly through his appearances on Maddox's podcasts. And Abobo's Big Adventure is awesome, but hard as fuck. I'll have to give it another shot sometime and see if I can beat it. Anyway, I doubt Roger has heard of Satan Ninja 198X unless Maddox has told him about it, but I suspect it'd be up his alley.

Anyway, if Roger was ever interested in helping us get an SN8X game made, that would be totally rad. But things like that need to happen organically. What I mean by that is, once you get any amount of success or fame, you start to get flooded with requests from total strangers who want you to use your success to somehow further their own projects. It's super annoying and it makes you really jaded, really quickly.

So yes, Roger would probably think SN8X is rad. But if I were to email him out of the blue and ask him to check out my comic, he'd probably ignore or delete the email. And even if he did check it out, he'd probably at least be annoyed and highly critical and looking for reasons to not like this unsolicited thing that a stranger has shoved in his face. Now, if, on the other hand, a friend of his were to say, "Hey, Roger, you should totally check out this comic." He'd likely be a lot more receptive to it. The same could be said if he were to stumble upon it on his own while browsing Reddit or something. That's what I mean about things like that needing to happen organically.

And that's just talking about how hard it can be to get someone to simply check out a webcomic, which requires minimal effort on their part. Asking a stranger to do actual work for you (and yes, making a video game—even a retro one—is a ton of hard work) is way too presumptuous. Especially if you can't afford to pay them (and I can't).

Or maybe it'll be like the NES game Urban Champion and everybody will just stand around pretending that nothing's happening; and then the fighting resumes once the police car leaves.

Whoa, I'm surprised that I'm totally unfamiliar with Urban Champion. I just read up on it and looked up a YouTube video. That's some pretty basic street brawling, but at least it has lots of punching dudes into manholes action.

Eh, maybe I should've worded that last sentence differently ...

Anyway, it's pretty incredible how much the street brawling genre had improved just a few years later when Double Dragon came out.

Definitely stay on this side of the law, there's potential for never ending pain if you steal something while trying to become successful.

No worries there. I familiarized myself with parody laws and all that jazz so that I could make certain we stay safe with SN8X.

That said, a quick google search informed me that creating a side-scroll beat-em-up game is incredibly difficult and not something to do by yourself on the side.

No, a game would be a massive undertaking for sure. However, my brother's a programmer, and I think he, Jessica, and I could pull off making an indy game. It's something we've talked about for a long time. But it's not a priority. If it happens, it'll probably be after this comic has run its course. Perhaps if the comic becomes popular enough, we could do a Kickstarter to gauge interest in a video game spinoff. If it's something the fans want, and we can get the money we'd need to buckle down and work on a game for a year or two, then it could happen. But that's a big if. The comic comes first.

Well, this Pacnsacdave guy does have a Youtube channel which contains videos of his work.

Yeah, I watched a bunch of his YouTube videos. Too many, actually. I got caught up trying to guess what games he pulled various assets from. The main reason I had trouble figuring out what the dude was all about, was that the first couple video games I clicked on had no descriptive text at all. Not on his site or on the YouTube video.

Anyways, if you want to go the legal route, maybe you could get a hold of the guys responsible for the AVGN video game.  That game was developed by Freakzone games and published by ScrewAttack Entertainment (I found this out by watching the AVGN on Youtube).  There's also tinyBuild-which I found out about from watching some Games Done Quick videos on Youtube-who publishes and develops video games.  Here's the link for Freakzone games: http://freakzonegames.com/.   Also, here's the link to tinyBuild: http://tinybuild.com/.  Lastly here's the link to ScrewAttack: http://screwattack.roosterteeth.com/.  I know that's a lot to digest, but I'd really like to help you guys out with this, since I think the idea of a Satan Ninja or Dude Shinobi video game is totally rad.  Okay, that's all I'm going to say about that because I don't want to come across as being too pushy.

No worries about seeming too pushy. I think it's rad that you're so interested in an SN8X-themed game. The examples you present were, I believe, a case where these retro-game developers were big fans of the property they based these games on, and so they were happy to pour countless man-hours into a video game spinoff. Chances are, none of these guys have ever even heard of Satan Ninja 198X (yet), so they're not going to have a burning desire to make an SN8X-themed video game. And we certainly don't have the money to pay them.

Plus Jessica and I are incredibly particular people, especially when it comes to our baby, so we'd want to be heavily involved in any sort of spin-off product. Ideally, doing it ourselves. You can read my response to Rijst up above to see how that might be possible some day.

That said, if we happen to get a mega-fan of our comic who also happens to be a retro-game maker, I think it would be super rad if he (or she!) were to make a SN8X-themed fan game. But that's certainly not something I can expect to happen.

At that moment, the sound of a police siren can be heard in the distance...! Razor yells out: "COPS! Let's bail!!!"

Also at that moment, Eddie grabs Sam, later collects his clothes and duck into an old building so that the psycho one can get dressed.
Then they slip out a door on another side to avoid Razor's gang and the police!!!!

I take it this is your prediction for the next page? Interesting. We'll have to see how close you are.

You guy's have also made it easy by putting the comments link directly in your posting of a new page.

Yeah, but even having to push a button to see the comments create a barrier of entry that a lot of casual readers are too lazy to cross.

I don't know. It's something Jessica and I are going to think about some more, and we'll discuss with Webmaster Ghoul.

Hey guys, there's this guy called Pacnsacdave who might be able to do that sort of thing.  He has a website called http://pacnsacdave.weebly.com/.  I learned about him from watching the LJN Defender on Youtube.  As a matter of fact Pacnsacdave made an LJN Defender NES Game.  The Youtube video of the LJN Defender game can be found here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebCWcCMA8T0 .

Whoa, that was a lot to sink my teeth into. This Pacnsacdave dude needs some kind of "About" page for his site or at least a bit of descriptive text to better explain what all these games on his site are. Apparently the guy makes NES ROM hacks where he mashes up assets from various games to create "new" games. What I find baffling is that he's actually charging money for some of these, like "Batman Vs. Predator." No way does he have permission to sell a game using those licenses. I'm guessing he's gotten away with it so far because he's not very well known.

It'd certainly be a neat novelty to have an SN8X game created by stitching together assets from various NES games, but if we were to ever make an actual Satan Ninja video game, I'd want to go the legitimate route and make a game from scratch. We'd take inspiration from retro games for sure, but I'd want the SN8X game to stand alone as its own thing. A good example would be the Scott Pilgrim game that came out a few years ago. It wears its River City Ransom influence on its sleeve, but it still manages to be it's own unique game.

Yeah you guys are definitely getting the hang of podcasting there. I really enjoyed that episode, thanks for that!

Thanks for listening, Science Dude! They're fun to do.

I also feel the need to watch this movie now. How does it compare with The Thing? That's from '82 as well right? I remember seeing that for the first time and not having a clue what I was watching..

Yeah, The Thing is also from '82, but I can't really compare it to Xtro. The Thing is a totally badass and well-made movie with good acting and some of the most amazing practical special effects ever done. And of course it stars a bearded Kurt Russel. It's probably the best movie John Carpenter ever made. Probably the best remake ever made as well. Xtro, on the other hand, is a piece of shit, but it's at least interesting to look at. Oh, and it has a French babe who gets topless, so it at least has that over The Thing. Xtro has a very strong 'what the fuck' factor and would probably make for a good movie for you to watch with some pals. Er, mates.

When I first started reading this last December, it took me about three days to catch up, because I'd always go to read the commentary for each page straight after.

Interesting. When we were designing this site, we decided not to display comments under every page like most webcomics do, because we wanted people to be able to read the comic straight through without comments drawing their eyes every page. So we went with a forum instead, despite a lot of people now thinking forums are dated. That might've been a mistake through, to be honest. I'm fairly certain that we'd get a lot more comments if people could simply post something directly under a page via social media login. Of course, this forum supports logging in via social media (I always log in through Google), but people aren't as used to doing that.

I've read TV Tropes quite a bit, usually in phases that last about one or two weeks, then an interim period, but I don't actually have an account. In the near future when I'll have way too much time on my hands, I'll see if I can get to it.

Dude, that'd make me so fucking happy! You'd become my favorite Aussie, for sure—even beating out my love for Lord Humungus. And since you've actually gone through and read the commentary for every page of the comic, that makes you highly qualified for the task.

223
Apologies for the mix-up.  I should've known better than to make that kind of mistake.  I promise that I'll never confuse the two of them again.  After all, I actually like Viper as he's a total badass-I can't wait for his next appearance.  Razor on the other hand, is a total dickwad who deserved some kind of retribution after the stunt he pulled at the Pizza Wizard.

No worries, dude. It's not hard to make that sort of mistake when there are a bunch of characters with names like, Viper, Razor, Toxic, etc. Hell, Viper's original name was Blake, and it took Jessica and I a super long time to stop calling him that.

The song the video's for in question is the brilliant "Voyeur" from Kim Carnes (think "Bette Davis Eyes"). Directed by an Australian Dude (who also did the likes of "I'm Still Standing", "True" and "Total Eclipse Of The Heart"). Uploaded by an Australian YouTube channel from an Australian music TV show. Ninja's appear out of nowhere briefly but don't exactly do much besides swing nun chucks. Maybe they're looking for the Satanic Glove?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGuvHYiFRmI

Holy shit, the bust-out ninja presence was awesome. Made me laugh out loud. So fuckin' rad.

Good find, Australian Dude! We have random shots of a busty corset babe, a random horse in an alley, cool stalker dude, and of course the completely out-of-nowhere nunchuck-wielding ninjas. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it was directed by the same dude who did "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which is one of my favorite '80s videos for the what-the-fuck factor.

Also, you should totally do 80's Music Video Reviews again. Unfortunately, yours truly was not here yet when you last did them.

Just for you, I shall. We've actually been watching a lot of '80s music videos lately during our food breaks. There're definitely some gems I could write about.

Here I am!  Anyways, I think that it's totally cool seeing Eddie kicking Viper and his gang's ass.

Whoa, I don't think Viper would be pleased with you getting him confused with Razor. And saying that he's gotten his ass kicked too, why Viper would sue for slander. Except he wouldn't, because he's a bad ass and suing someone is probably the least badass way to handle a gripe.

But seriously, if you think about this situation, Eddie and Sam are kind of being the bullies here. They went out specifically looking for trouble, and when they don't have any luck, Sam decides to instigate a confrontation by stripping down to his underwear. Not to say that Razor and his alternative posse don't deserve to get a little ass-kicking...

Besides, I can't blame Eddie for wanting a chance to use his newfound ninja powers by beating up some creeps.
