How would this have turned out if Alex was with them?

Pretty differently. You could think of Alex and Sam as the proverbial angel and devil on Eddie's shoulders, but now the angel's MIA...

Right, Alex isn't a wet blanket, but she actually has a moral compass, where's Sam sold his for drugs and booze a long time ago.

Oh wow, it appears that someone is trying to kick me out of the job of decoding references!

No worries, Aussie Dude, because there just so happens to be a vacancy in the SN8X TV Tropes department that needs filling. Perhaps someday I'll be able to check the TV Tropes page without a solitary manly tear spilling down my cheek at the lack of content.

But anyways, as we discussed in the D & D mansion pages, The Doomed are The Damned and Brothers of Cruelty are Sisters of Mercy. And that other arcade game was Bad Dudes, as discussed in the arcade commentary.

All correct. That doesn't leave many question marks left on the list, although the list is incomplete.

So is The Eternal Dead inspired by a goth band?

The Eternal Departed* was sussed out by Science Dude earlier in the thread.

Also don't forget Debbany, obviously a cross between Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.

Correct. Hopefully her music leans more toward Debbie Gibson than Tiffany...

This is another page that I originally wrote way too much dialogue for. My initial draft goes into more detail about Dean’s older sister Debbie. About how she’s a model who moved out to LA, where she’s now dating a famous movie director and getting some bit movie roles. But none of that’s very important, so it was cut.

So how does Trance know that SlatCorp Tower has machine gun wielding robots patrolling it? Because his dad, Doc Sheen, is a scientist who works for SlateCorp’s robotics research and development division.

This one's wrong. But I can't blame you, as the real-world band that inspired The Eternal Departed is extremely obscure and is one of the only (in fact I think it's the only) parody name that isn't inspired by something from the '80s ...

Has to be the EverDead, a horror-themed rock band from Grand Rapids, MI. formed in the spring of 2000.. 

Oooo, I heard their singer was a mega hunk!

Yeah, I met him once. He's a bad ass!

So the legends say... In fact, I heard he beat every level of Star Road in Super Mario World! And that he once punched a bee right out of the air like it was no big deal.

I've only seen the new one and I enjoyed it. Which one was the truer grit in your opinion?

Shit, you've backed me into a corner here. Since I tend to be a purist, I sorta have to say that the original True Grit is the truer grit by virtue of it being first. That said, the remade True Grit is the grittier.

Films these days are grittier in general though, if we place them both in the context of contemporary films the original might be relatively grittier?

::sigh:: All that truly matters is that the original lacks the bear man, which was my favorite part of the remake.

Whoa, that's an impressive list, and you got almost all of them right. Great job, dragon dude! I'm not going to spoil all the fun by telling you what the question marks are, but I'll at least tell you which ones you got wrong.

Oh, and one thing to note is that some of our parody titles take inspiration from more than one real-world source.

Dude Shinobi = American Ninja

Dude Shinobi is mostly inspired by the American Ninja franchise, as you've guessed, but he's also inspired by a couple other action stars. Two in particular.

Double Dudes = Double Dragon

Partially correct. Double Dudes vs. Satan Ninja is a combination of Double Dragon and another arcade game.

Horrific Holiday = Halloween

Partially correct. It's inspired by the general trend for horror films to always be themed after a particular holiday or special date (Halloween, Silent Night Deadly Night, Friday the 13th, April Fool's Day, New Years Evil, My Bloody Valentine, Happy Birthday to Me, etc.)

The rest you got spot on.

There was an old True Grit?

Yeah, it was famous John Wayne movie from the late sixties. I think John Wayne won an award for it. Jessica and I watched a few John Wayne westerns and we weren't too into them, although The Searches was pretty good. We're definitely more in the Eastwood camp.

That ComicBookGirl19 (I imagine that being her original AOL username from the '90s that she never let go of) video was interesting. I'm aware of China's growing consumption of Hollywood movies and our resulting pandering by shoe-horning short Chinese-focus scenes into some of our blockbusters, but I never considered that the increased number of remakes would have anything to do with that. I had no idea that Hollywood movies were banned in China until the mid-90s, but I'm not surprised.

But even without considering China, remakes make great business sense. Without a huge marketing campaign, it can be mega hard to make people aware of a new original movie, but it's guaranteed that people will talk about a remake. Also, many fanboys will go see a remake regardless of it's quality, so the studios don't feel they need to worry about appealing to them--they're considered a sure thing. So instead they pander to the younger generation that probably never experienced the original and who tend to be less critical in general.

It's hard for me to imagine a remake that I could be excited about. Jessica and I didn't bother to see the remakes of Robocop or Total Recall or Ghostbusters, because none of them looked looked appealing to us. I can't remember the last remake I watched and really enjoyed. Oh, Jessica just reminded me that we really liked the new True Grit.

Anyone familiar with all or some of the above listed???

Interesting choices, Red. They seem a bit all over the place. The ones I had to Google were Seduction of the Innocent, Gladiator, and Asterix the Gaul. Gladiator seems vaguely familiar to me, I must've read about it a long time ago. I've read a bit about the '50s moral panic over comic books, so I've probably seen Seduction of the Innocent referenced, but I know I've never read it.

I'm pretty familiar with Doctor Who because I have a lot of mega fans in my extended friend group, but I've personally only seen a single episode, which was from the David Tennant era. I was surprised at how cheesy and low budget the special effects were, considering the popularity of the show. It looked about on par with Ghostwriter.

Holy shit, while I was looking up the intro to Ghostwriter that I linked to up above, I came across this amazing scene from the show where a very young Julia Stiles schools the less hip kids on what cyberpunk is.

Anyway, as for what titles these would have in the SN8X-verse ... I'll stew on it for a couple days to give someone else a chance to give  a shot before me.
