On the plus side, we had<a href="/extras/interviews"> our first interviews about SN8X</a>, our <a href="/blog/2016/06/issue-3-page-26-our-first-video-review-tv-tropes">first YouTube review</a>, we went out to Hollywood to be <a href="/blog/2016/12/adam-and-jessica-debate-the-80s-on-maddoxs-podcast">guests on one of our favorite podcasts</a>, we started <a href="https://radicast.podbean.com/" target="_blank">a podcast of our own</a>, I finally released <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MCZMS9C">my horror novel</a>, <a href="https://www.patreon.com/JessicaSafron">Jessica's Patreon</a> has passed the half-way mark toward her first goal, and of course we released a bunch of badass pages of SN8X.</p><p>On the downside, we haven't released nearly enough badass pages of SN8X this year. Especially these last few months as Jessica has been struggling with juggling various projects at once. We also didn't do a single convention appearance this year, and blog posts have been relatively infrequent due to me focusing on writing.</p><p>But 2017 is looking to be the year of the Satan Ninja. We'll be starting the fourth issue of the comic, which is where is everything in the story really falls into place. Just as Issue 1 was largely setup for Issue 2, Issue 3 has been largely setup for the events of Issue 4. You could sort of think of these bonus comics as deleted scenes. They tend to show some amusing aside that adds some extra flavor to the SN8X-verse, but isn't essential to the story (like the two peeping ninjas arguing about whether or not Alex's bedroom belongs to a boy or a girl, or Patrick Hyser's battle with the sensei of the Snake Shi).</p><p>This month is our 8th such bonus comic, and it's a flashback to a Halloween when Eddie, at the age of 14, first got up the courage to ask Veronica on a date. Showing you the whole comic wouldn't be fair to Jessica's awesome Patrons, since its a reward for their support, but we hope you enjoy this sneak peak of Eddie and Joe in their Halloween costumes.</p><p>In other news, we've recently received an award! As part of our effort to get as many people as possible aware of our comic, we upload it to several webcomic hosting sites. One of those is The Duck (previously known as Drunk Duck), and they hand out annual awards that are determined by the votes of the readers. I finished the first draft in 2009, then every couple years or so, I'd bust it out and give it a revision.</p><p>And now it's done and it's published and you should totally <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MCZMS9C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477709939&sr=8-1&keywords=Grim+October">click here and buy it</a>. Because it's awesome.</p><p>However, it's awesome in a different way than <em>Satan Ninja 198X</em> is awesome. Naturally, it's set in the 1980s (mostly 1989), but it's not an over-the-top comedy homage like SN8X—it's a full-fledged supernatural horror novel. Think Stephen King meets Richard Laymon (if you haven't heard of Laymon, he specialized in fast-paced and brutal-yet-fun horror filled with sex and violence).</p><p>So <em>Grim October</em> definitely has a more serious and realistic tone than SN8X, but it's not without humor, and it has some of the other sensibilities you'd expect from me, such as '80s pop-culture references, sexy babes, and brutal violence. And if you're a little wary after reading "young love" on the cover, don't worry. I assure you that this is a far cry from the sort of sappy young adult fiction that involves sparkling vampires.</p><p>So what's my book about? Well, I don't want to give much of the plot away, so I'll just say that its about a seventeen-year-old named Derek who moves to a small town in Michigan around Halloween time, and uncovers some kind of supernatural horror.</p><p>It's a little bit like <em>Stranger Things</em>, except it focuses on older teens and, if it were a movie, it'd receive a hard-R rating for sex, violence, strong language, and drug use. If I had to compare it to some '80s movies, I'd say it has some similarities to <em>Trick or Treat</em>, <em>River's Edge</em>, <em>A Nightmare on Elm Street</em>, and <em>The Lost Boys</em> (though it's not about vampires).</p><p>Oh, and of course it features awesome illustrations by Jessica Safron. I had planned to release it on October 1st, but I ended up re-writing some of it and Jessica re-worked some of her illustrations. But hey, at least it's made it out just in time for Halloween weekend.</p><p>And now that this book is finally done, we can go back to focusing on <em>Satan Ninja 198X</em>. For instance, a couple background extras at the pool party scene were given slightly more '80s looking hair. When I listened to today's episode (#63), I about died from fan-girlish glee hearing them talk about me and react to my art (starting at the 11:15 mark, and again briefly at the end of the episode). <a href="http://thebiggestproblemintheuniverse.com/episode-63/" target="_blank">You can listen to the episode here.</a> <em>Satan Ninja</em> even got a shout out.</p><p>To give you some context, <a href="http://thebiggestproblemintheuniverse.com/episode-62/" target="_blank">the previous episode</a> was the one that inspired the art (the parts relevant to the fan art are between the three and five minute marks).</p><p>If you can't listen to the episodes for some crazy reason, here's the gist: Their guest in Episode 62, <a href="http://thehiggsweldon.com/" target="_blank">Robin Higgins</a>, mentioned that the first guy she ever jerked it to was Wesley Crusher from <em>Star Trek TGN</em>. So, Maddox and Dick mentioned the girls who motivated their first jerk-off experiences.</p><p>Maddox's description of his first jerk fantasies was especially weird, in the best way. Holy shit is it awesome.</p><p>Anyway, this weekend Jessica is putting the finishing touches on our revised Issue 01. Everything is done except for some lighting changes she plans to do tomorrow to the night scenes. All the Issue 1 pages on the site have been updated with the newest versions, but you might have to refresh the pages to see the update.</p><p>I already showed you a few comparisons of how the art has been updated in a <a href="/blog/2015/05/hiatus-continues-updated-issue-1-pages">previous post</a>, but here's a bunch more.</p><p><img alt="" src="/sites/satanninja.com/files/images/blog/sn_01_05_comparison-punk-girl.gif" style="width: 550px;" width="550" height="564" /></p><p>You can see the colors are now yummier, and so is Toxic's face (Toxic is the punk chick—the dude's name is Scorp, by the way). We decided to base her appearance more on a certain iconic punk chick that appeared in a couple classic '80s films.</p><p><img alt="" src="/sites/satanninja.com/files/images/blog/sn_01_06_Alex-and-Trance-comparison.gif" style="width: 600px;" width="600" height="721" /></p><p><a href="/comic/satan-ninja-198x/issue-1-video-dreamer/page-6">This page</a> was the only page to have substantial dialogue re-writes with this update. As you can see in this panel, we decided to leave Trance's race a little more ambiguous. Also, our idea of his character has evolved quite a bit since I first wrote this page, so we changed this panel to reflect that. And we both thought Alex looked kind of terrifying in this panel, so that needed fixing. We actually liked the way Jessica drew Trance in the original version, but it no longer made sense for his character to care at all about losing a video game, so he needed to look less intense and more care-free.</p><p> </p><p><img alt="Old Sleeping Eddie" src="/sites/satanninja.com/files/images/blog/sn_01_08_2026x3075-original.jpg" style="width: 650px;" width="650" height="599" /></p><p><img alt="New Eddie Sleeping" src="/sites/satanninja.com/files/images/blog/sn_01_08_2026x3075-updated.jpg" style="width: 650px;" width="650" height="600" /></p><p>Here you see we totally revamped Eddie's house and his bedroom. One of the things I've done during this hiatus is designed Eddie and Alex's houses (including their yards). I'm not going to be so detailed for every character, of course, but both their houses play big roles in the comic, so the detailed floorplans I made up will be a big aid to Jessica. Originally, we had Eddie's room in the basement, but we've since decided to move him into the attic for various reasons. So until Issue 02 gets updated, there'll be a few panels that won't quite gel with this updated Issue 01 page.</p><p><img alt="" src="/sites/satanninja.com/files/images/blog/sn_01_10_2026x3075-Veronica-Cry-Comparison.gif" style="width: 650px;" width="650" height="748" /></p><p>Veronica's room has also been updated. Jessica fixed the perspective, and redid the posters (and framed picture). Now the dudes in the posers look even <em>more </em>punchable! Awesome! I think the only character that's been redesigned more than Sam is Ket.
