Music Video: "Voo Doo" by Rachel Sweet [1982]

Rachel Sweet Blame it on Love

I had planned to do a movie review this week, but I'm still sick, so you're getting a quickie music video feature instead.

I know she totally looks like jailbait, but Rachel Sweet was actually 19 or 20 when this masterpiece of spooky seduction was made. "Abracadabra, baby," indeed. My favorite part has to be the superimposed cat that pops up around the 2:10 mark.

This song's from her fourth and final album, Blame it on Love (1982). After the album failed to do well in spite of this majestic video, she dropped out of the music business.

Mostly. She did return from time to time to record stuff for soundtracks and theme songs. Like the opening to the early '90s Nickelodeon show, Clarissa Explains It All:

So obnoxiously early '90s. Sorry about that.

Music Video: "Samurai" by Michael Cretu [1985]

Michael Cretu Samurai

I came down with the flu this week, so I've been all lazy and I'm posting this later than I would've liked. But it's a good one. In fact, it may be the most delightfully '80s music video we've featured thus far.

Michael Cretu is a Romanian-German dude who's mostly famous for his later music project, Enigma (which, in turn, is mostly known for those Pure Moods CD commercials that were ubiquitous in the '90s). And he's also known for long-term boning one of Europe's most famous '80s pop stars, Sandra.

He released two solo albums in the '80s, which are kind of unique in that he released two versions of them, one in English and the other German. "Samurai" came from his second album and was a huge hit in Europe, but didn't get too much attention in the US despite having this totally rad music video:

Man, I fucking love this song.

The Evolution of Eddie's Dude Shinobi Poster

Dude Shinobi Satan Ninja 198X

So in-between working extra shifts and having turkey-centric events with friends and family, Jessica's been working on detailing the posters in Eddie's basement room. She recently finished reworking Eddie's Dude Shinobi poster, but this isn't the first time she's redone it.

Back in 2008, she drew the first half-dozen pages of what was originally going to be a short prologue to the comic until we decided to expand it into a full issue. The pages were a lot rougher back then. Here's what the original poster looked like:

Duke Shinobi Poster

You can see that the character's name was originally Duke Shinobi and he had blond hair. However, a couple people we showed the page to understandably assumed he was meant to be a Duke Nukem parody. That wasn't our intent at all, so we knew we had to make some changes.

Here's the second version of the poster:

And finally, here's the poster in its current, most radical form:

News Update & He-Man Commercials

He-Man Masters of the Universe Toys

Bummer alert! There's not gonna be a page posted this weekend, as this week is bursting with extra work shifts and family events. We'll still post some badass art from Jessica this Saturday, but the next page will have to wait until December 6. Bummer alert over.

And now it's time for me to talk to you about He-Man.

One of my earliest memories is playing on a big dirt pile outside my house with my Man-E-Faces toy. Masters of the Universe bedsheets served as my nightly shield against the monsters of the dark. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is the very first franchise I can remember being a big fan of.

This past year, Jessica and I have watched a bunch of episodes from the orignal He-Man cartoon. Holy shit can that show be awesomely retarded. But I'm not talking about the cartoon today. Nor the Dolph Lundgren movie. We'll save those for another time.

Today, it's all about the toys. Er, the toy commercials, actually. I had a pretty decent collection of Masters of the Universe toys (including Castle Greyskull and Snake Mountain), but upon watching this collection of Masters of the Universe toy commercials, I feel fucking robbed. How did I ever make it through my childhood without a Land Shark? Or Moss Man?! Fuck!

This is my Thanksgiving gift to all of you:
