Issue 4 - Rad As Hell - Page 14 - Ninjas Bust In
« on: September 15, 2018, 09:04:30 PM »

There wasn’t room on the page to actually show it, (and the pixel art would’ve made the page take too long) but the game Trance and Corey are playing in Eddie’s room is Downtown Beatdown, which is totally the best two-player co-op game for the Tendocom Amusement Device (TAD for short).

In the final panel, the door behind Corey leads to the small upstairs bathroom that’s right outside Eddie’s room. Other than those two rooms (and a closet connected to Eddie’s room), that level of the house is an unfinished attic that’s used for storage.

I considered having Corey still be on the toilet when he hears the commotion go down, but that’s venturing a bit too close to toilet humor territory for our tastes. Besides, I like how it makes Corey seem more cowardly, the way he’s standing right outside the bedroom door, but is too afraid to open it and see what’s happening to his friend.

Hey Adam, whenever I click on the image for issue 4 page 14 from this section I just get sent to some page that says, "This site can't be reached."  However, when I click on the image on the home page it works just fine.

Yeah, I made a dumb error. Fixed! Thanks for the heads up.

To give them a little bit of credit, Corey left the room to go to the bathroom by the time the ninjas were peeping in the window, so it's only Trance they mistook for Eddie. And besides, all those non-ninjas look the same.

Yeah! What the fuck, Jessica?!

Actually, I think they're doing it to give themselves a 'we're totally not gay' buffer. On the other hand, it'd look weird if they were sitting on complete opposite ends of the couch.

When they're playing Downtown Beatdown , it reminds me of playing Double Dragon 2 on two player B mode.   That's because in that mode you could actually beat up your partner and kill them, by knocking him into a pit for instance.  Back in the day I would play Double Dragon 2 by myself and I would select two player B mode.  The reason I did so was because of the stealing lives trick.  Also, Battletoads is a game that's notorious for the whole 'friendly fire' thing in two player mode (I've never actually played that game though).  I don't know about you, but I think it's odd that such an option even exists.

I was a big Double Dragon fan in my youth--the first game I ever beat was the first Double Dragon in the arcade. So I played quite a bit of Double Dragon II on the NES, but I'm not sure if I knew about that trick of using the two player B mode. Interesting.

Oh man, Battletoads. I either owned that game or I simply rented it a lot. Can't remember. But I never beat it. Even when using the Game Genie cheat device. Last year I booted up a ROM of it and was determined to set right that wrong, but even using save states, I couldn't beat it.

Fuck Battletoads. (However, I was totally into the Dark Queen.)

It exists to ruin friendships, of course.

Last summer, during our "honeymoon," Jessica and I played through my favorite co-op NES game, River City Ransom. That has friendly fire, but it didn't end up becoming an issue. Maybe due to the power of our love.
