Discuss Anything / Article: Why are we so obsessed with the 1980s?
« on: October 27, 2016, 12:35:35 AM »
A really interesting Entertainment Geekly article (only article of its kind, unfortunately) from January 2014, that I think can strongly, strongly be applied to one's understanding of Satan Ninja 198X.
http://www.ew.com/article/2014/01/23/80s-genre-entertainment-geekly

Some interesting points are how it says the 80s as a decade are a genre unto itself, with conventians that this comic uses such as synth music(not in it, but you have linked ideal synth songs to play along while reading), neon lights, a mixture of raw brutality and endearing innocence, karate, cocaine and aesthetically unpleasing computers. You can pretty much find all these things in this comic, aided strongly by the website aesthetic as well.

Another interesting point from the article is how it says that you can imagine characters from 80s set period prices actually in there world going to see actual 80s movies, which is imaginable because  of the way these pieces are made, in a way that they share the same world as these movies. So with this comic, I can actually imagine characters going to see such movies, or listening to synth music, because of the way the comic is done.

It also states that the 80s are now an "actual cultural and artistic force", which I think is strongly relevant now, with examples such as this comic, Stranger Things and synthwave music. These aren't simple parodies just existing to poke fun at the time, they actually relish and create an actual feel of the time, which, as was stated before, is a mixture of "a mixture of raw brutality and endearing innocence", which can come from the fact that things like teen movies can be seen as innocent but action and horror movies relentlessly raw and bloody.

Plus, it also brings up the then kickstarter Kung Fury, which, while pretty different from this comic, the intentions of which are stated for making the film do seem to kind of resemble your reasons for making this comic as well.

But anyway, it's an interesting read. Bet you never thought this comic would get an artistic analysis, did you? Well, now it has.

God dammn it I got beaten to the punch in referencing. But what can you do, I was on a university public computer when I first saw the update on Facebook. Yeah that's definitely Stacey Q's best song (did you know that over the course of the 80s, she went from Q, to SSQ, to Stacey Q? True story). Oh and Vanity 6 are awesome.

Oh wow, it appears that someone is trying to kick me out of the job of decoding references!

No worries, Aussie Dude, because there just so happens to be a vacancy in the SN8X TV Tropes department that needs filling. Perhaps someday I'll be able to check the TV Tropes page without a solitary manly tear spilling down my cheek at the lack of content.

I finish my University course at the end of the year, I'll see if I can get to it afterwards.

So is The Eternal Dead inspired by a goth band?

The Eternal Departed* was sussed out by Science Dude earlier in the thread.

Whoops, skimmed over it. Will we see a cameo of The Eternal Departed, perhaps?

Oh wow, it appears that someone is trying to kick me out of the job of decoding references! But anyways, as we discussed in the D & D mansion pages, The Doomed are The Damned and Brothers of Cruelty are Sisters of Mercy. And that other arcade game was Bad Dudes, as discussed in the arcade commentary. So is The Eternal Dead inspired by a goth band?
Also don't forget Debbany, obviously a cross between Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.

Happy Birthday Jessica! So, did you's go to Pizza Wizard to celebrate? Did she almost beat an ultra hard arcade game and then get interrupted by a bunch of punks, meaning that now she has to go on a journey to become a Satan Ninja to get sweet revenge?

I love how the mystical horse and ninja's are there for no reason, just because why not.

Just for you, I shall. We've actually been watching a lot of '80s music videos lately during our food breaks. There're definitely some gems I could write about.
Awesome, now I feel special.

When I first started reading this last December, it took me about three days to catch up, because I'd always go to read the commentary for each page straight after.
I've read TV Tropes quite a bit, usually in phases that last about one or two weeks, then an interim period, but I don't actually have an account. In the near future when I'll have way too much time on my hands, I'll see if I can get to it.

Discuss Anything / Ninja's in 80's Music Video
« on: August 04, 2016, 06:18:17 AM »
The song the video's for in question is the brilliant "Voyeur" from Kim Carnes (think "Bette Davis Eyes"). Directed by an Australian Dude (who also did the likes of "I'm Still Standing", "True" and "Total Eclipse Of The Heart"). Uploaded by an Australian YouTube channel from an Australian music TV show. Ninja's appear out of nowhere briefly but don't exactly do much besides swing nun chucks. Maybe they're looking for the Satanic Glove?

Also, you should totally do 80's Music Video Reviews again. Unfortunately, yours truly was not here yet when you last did them.

Awesome page! Sweet revenge! Say, could Eddie now go back to the arcade and finally get the Bad Dudes VS. Satan Ninja victory these punks robbed him off? Or is the game simply THAT hard?
And updating that schedule is much better as well, with the detail that goes into this, it's crazy to expect a Saturday release EVERY time, besides, your Saturday's a Sunday where I am anyway. This should allow for a more fluid schedule that can take in different efforts each page requires.

What happens after 11:59:59, 31 December 198X? Does the year change in any way or does it just become 198X again?

27
The whole boy thing definitely worked on me. I thought it was Trance at first.

28
Haha that Ninja Star joke was gold. I'm guessing someone's watching it at the movies? Or what I suspect on TV being watched by Eddie and Alex?
Also I think so far yous have done a good job of keeping the world consistent.

You edited your comment to save me face in the future, you're too kind.

Damn, just noticed my spelling error in your quote of me, and now it's there forever. Looking forward to Mr. Skull potentially coming up again.
